How to Send a Group Text Message Without Showing Numbers: iPhone, Android and Broadcast Services

Last materially reviewed 2026-10-03

Quick answerGoogle Messages has a mass text setting that returns replies to you individually. On iPhone the Messages app picks the group type itself. A broadcast service such as TXT180 keeps replies in your inbox only.

Sending a group text without showing numbers: the short answer

To send a group text message without showing numbers, each person has to receive it as an individual text, not as a shared group thread. On Android, Google Messages has a setting called mass text, which Google's help page says sends an SMS and returns individual replies. That page does not say in so many words that recipients cannot see each other's numbers. On iPhone, Apple's Messages app chooses the group type automatically, so you cannot rely on it. A broadcast texting service is the more dependable route: it sends from the service's own dedicated number, and TXT180's features page says replies to a group message are not seen by anyone in the group.

What each route does, per Apple, Google and TXT180 documentation read on 3 October 2026
RouteWhat recipients getWhere replies go
iPhone group iMessage or group MMSA shared group conversationEveryone sees all responses
iPhone group SMSA text from youSent as individual texts; recipients cannot see the other responses
Google Messages set to mass textAn SMS from youIndividual replies to you
Google Messages group MMSA shared group conversationAn MMS reply to all recipients
Broadcast service (TXT180)A text from the service's dedicated numberYour inbox only; not seen by anyone in the group

What iPhone group messaging does, per Apple

Apple's support page on group texts says the Messages app automatically chooses the type of message based on settings, network connection and carrier plan. If every recipient uses an Apple device with iMessage turned on, the message goes as a group iMessage. If anyone does not, it goes as MMS or SMS, or RCS on iOS 18.

Apple describes three outcomes. In a group iMessage and in a group MMS, everyone can see all responses from the group. In a group SMS, all responses are sent as individual text messages and recipients cannot see the other responses. The same page says group MMS on an iPhone requires MMS Messaging to be turned on in the Messages settings. Apple's page does not offer a per-message choice, and it does not say in so many words what recipients see of each other's numbers in a group SMS, so do not treat the iPhone route as a guarantee of privacy.

What Android group messaging does, per Google

Google's help page for Google Messages describes two group settings. Group conversations send an MMS reply to all recipients. Mass text sends an SMS reply to all recipients and you get individual replies. To change it:

  1. Open Google Messages.
  2. Tap your profile photo or icon, then Messages settings, then Advanced, then Group messaging.
  3. Choose mass text as your default.

The setting is a default for the app, not a choice per message, so switch it back if you later want a normal group chat. Google's page also notes that if all members have RCS chats turned on, the conversation is an RCS group with its own options, and that adding a contact without the RCS tag creates an MMS chat. Check the conversation type before you send. Messages still go from your personal number on your own carrier plan.

The broadcast-service route, step by step

A broadcast service is built for exactly this. Using TXT180 as the example, from its How It Works and features pages:

  1. Sign up and choose a keyword and a dedicated number. The trial is 15 days with 50 messages and no credit card.
  2. Ask people to opt in by texting the keyword to the number, or add people who have given consent.
  3. Write one message and send it to the list or to a group.
  4. Each person receives it from that number. TXT180's features page says replies to a group message are not seen by anyone in the group and arrive as individual messages in your inbox.

Worked example. A youth sports league wants to tell 120 parents that Saturday's games have moved. As a phone group chat, that is 120 people in one thread. Through TXT180 it is 120 credits from a 500-credit plan, which is $24.95 month-to-month, as read on 3 October 2026. The text comes from the league's TXT180 number, and the features page says replies reach only the league's inbox. Whether you need this or a real group chat is covered in group chat or broadcast.

A mistake to avoid: assuming the phone will send it individually

A mistake to avoid is typing a list of names into a new message on a phone and assuming it will go out one by one. Apple's page says the app picks the type itself: if all recipients have iMessage, it becomes a group iMessage where everyone sees all responses. On Android, the result depends on the group messaging default and on whether the contacts have RCS. Send a test to two or three people you know and ask what they see before sending to a full list.

For anything beyond a handful of people, use a service where keeping replies out of a shared thread does not depend on a phone setting. If the list is large or you send regularly, compare options in best group text service, and plan for the replies that will come back using the reply workload guide.
