Text Alert System for Schools: Options for Everyday Announcements, Not Emergencies

Last materially reviewed 2026-10-03

Quick answerFor routine school announcements, a group texting service such as TXT180 works: 2,000 texts a month is $69.95. It is not an emergency notification system, and TXT180's terms say so.

A text message system for schools covers routine notices, not emergencies

A text alert system for schools, in the sense covered here, is a group texting service that sends routine announcements to families who opted in: planned early dismissals, schedule changes, event reminders, form deadlines, weather closures decided the night before. A text message system for schools of this kind costs little to run, and five are priced below.

Emergency notification is a different class of system. TXT180's terms state that delivery is not guaranteed, may be delayed by carriers, and that the service is not to be used as an emergency alert system. The FCC describes Wireless Emergency Alerts as a public safety system in which authorized government officials send alerts through FEMA to phones in an affected area, with no sign-up, and notes that many providers send them with technology separate from SMS. A school that needs lockdown or safety alerts should buy a product built and contracted for that purpose, and treat anything on this page as the everyday channel only. None of the services below is presented here as suitable for emergencies. Because delivery can be delayed, a notice that families must have by a set time should also go out through the school's other channels.

Which TXT180 features serve a school office

  • Groups people join themselves. The features page says an opt-in can join a group directly, so each grade, team or bus route can have its own list.
  • Private replies. A parent's reply to a group message is seen only in the school's inbox, not by other families.
  • Scheduler and templates. A reminder can be queued for the evening before, and repeated notices saved.
  • Sub-users. Extra logins can be tied to particular keywords and blocked from billing, so a coach can text a team without access to payments.

Families must agree to receive texts. TXT180's terms allow only permission-based lists, and its FAQ says spreadsheet imports are allowed when opt-in rules have been met. Collect consent on the enrollment form and keep the record. The consent readiness guide lists what to keep.

A worked example: 400 families, five texts a month

Four hundred families texted five times a month is 2,000 credits. On TXT180 that is the 2,000-credit plan: $69.95 month-to-month, or $54.95 a month billed annually, as read on 3 October 2026.

Now add one extra announcement to all 400 families, such as a rescheduled event, in a month when the plan credits are already used. TXT180 sells rollover bundles: 500 credits at $0.04 each is $20. The notice uses 400, and the pricing page says the remaining 100 do not expire while the account is active. Keeping one unused bundle in reserve is a low-cost way to cover an extra send. Keep messages as plain SMS. A picture message uses three credits per family, so the same notice as MMS would use 1,200. More on this in the credit budget guide.

Limits that matter to schools, and the alternative for K-12 districts

Three limits to weigh. TXT180's FAQ gives 160 characters as the SMS limit, so notices must be short. Its public pages do not mention translation into other languages or voice calls. And its terms prohibit posting personally identifying information about children without consent, so keep student names out of group texts.

For a K-12 school or district that needs translation and voice calls in one product, the named alternative is a school communication platform. Remind's website points K-12 schools and districts to ParentSquare, and describes Remind Hub, for organizations outside K-12, as offering messages in more than 90 languages, voice calls and urgent alerts. Neither publishes a price on the pages read, so ask for a quote. Those are Remind's own descriptions; this page has not assessed either product for emergency notification, so a school should confirm that with the vendor and its district. A single teacher or coach can use Remind Chat, which Remind describes as free two-way messaging. If you are unsure whether a broadcast tool is enough, read when a broadcast tool fits.
