A worked example: 250 contacts, four texts a month

That is 1,000 credits a month. TXT180's 1,000-credit plan is $39.95 month-to-month. SimpleTexting's is $49 plus the $10 local number, so $59, before carrier fees that its FAQ puts at roughly $0.0025 a message in the United States, or about $2.50 on 1,000 texts. The gap is $19.05 a month before those fees.

SimpleTexting's pricing FAQ says nonprofits, churches and other tax-exempt organizations get 15% off any monthly plan. On the $49 plan that is $7.35 off, which narrows the gap but does not close it. The page does not say whether the discount also applies to the number fee. SimpleTexting's pricing page lists a toll-free number at no additional fee, which brings its 1,000-credit plan to $49, or $41.65 with the discount, still above $39.95. One thing each does that the other does not

SimpleTexting only: three user seats are included in every paid plan, live support runs seven days a week, and an extended message of up to 306 characters can be sent for two credits. TXT180's FAQ gives 160 characters as the SMS limit, and its support page lists weekday hours only: Monday to Thursday 7:30am to 4:30pm and Friday 8am to 2pm Mountain time.

TXT180 only: credits bought as extra bundles do not expire while the account stays active, and there are fixed-price tiers at 1,500 and 2,500 credits, sizes SimpleTexting's page does not list. On SimpleTexting, unused monthly credits last until the end of the following month and are lost if you downgrade.

Who each service suits

  • TXT180 suits a single administrator or a pair of volunteers sending SMS announcements, where the monthly bill is the deciding factor.
  • SimpleTexting suits an office where three people share the work, where someone may need help on a Saturday or Sunday, or where a stated 30-day refund matters to the person approving the spend.
  • If replies are the heavy part of the job, count that first. The reply workload guide helps decide whether extra seats are worth paying for.

What switching between TXT180 and SimpleTexting involves

The sending number changes in either direction, so warn your list first. Only move contacts who opted in. TXT180's features page says list imports are switched on by its support team once regulatory requirements are met.

Leaving TXT180 is done by phoning customer support, with three business days' notice on a monthly account and 30 days on a prepaid annual account. Warning: TXT180's terms say prepaid message bundles are forfeited on termination and archived data is deleted within 60 days. Export your contacts and opt-outs before you call, because neither step can be undone. A full checklist is in the supplier exit guide.
